Cookie Monster is one of the main puppet characters featured on the long-running children's educational television program Sesame Street. He is, as his name implies, a monster who loves and is mostly seen eating cookies, a trait that caused perceived controversy over health and obesity issues and led to the widespread rumor in the early 2000s that he would be changed into or replaced with a "Veggie Monster". In actuality, Cookie Monster was put on somewhat of a "diet" amounting to him eating fewer cookies and more of various other foods, while keeping his identity.
Notable sequences from the show prominently featuring Cookie Monster include the musical numbers "C is for Cookie", "A Cookie is a Sometimes Food" and "Healthy Foods", "Monsterpiece Theater" in which he appears as host figure "Alistair Cookie", a sketch where he fails to deduce that a "mystery" item being presented by Kermit the Frog is an orange and not a cookie, and even a parody of The Hunger Games called "The Hungry Games". The character is also widely believed to be the origin of the now-classic memetic phrase "OM NOM NOM!"
